I joined Match.com in July of 2001, after hearing my friend tell me over & over again how I should "just try it." I figured that I'd post an ad, and if someone wanted to respond, then so be it.
I was actually just doing it for fun, and never thought anything would ever come out of it. But then I got an email 3 weeks later in the beginning of August from Garbs1, and I took a chance - I replied back to him. After a week of emails back & forth, I knew we had to talk.
 After a record first phone conversation that lasted 8 hours & 48 minutes, I had to "cut it short" because it was 5:30 in the morning & I had to go to work - with no sleep! I was sure from that conversation that I'd just met an incredible person, but I was afraid that it was too good to be true.
Over the next week, we planned to go out. The night we had our date, we had a great time, and stayed up talking until 7 in the morning! He asked me if he could see me again, and I said, "Sure! When?" He said, "How's 'later' sound?"... I told him that would be great – what he didn't know is that I had another date with an old flame that night! I had to cancel that date to go out with him again. We went out again that night, and we were attached at the hip immediately. Within 2 weeks, we'd fallen in love, and I just knew he was the one. He was and is the most perfect person for me - he is the best of everything I could have ever wished for, all wrapped up in a 6'1" package!
But only days after we declared our love for each other, tragedy struck on 9/11. I work in downtown Manhattan, right across the street from the WTC, and I almost died that day, getting caught outside in the street only 2 blocks away when the first tower fell. I know this sounds totally cliche, but at the moment I thought it was the end for me, I said to myself, "wow... I'm going to die, and I just met the man I'm going to marry."
Needless to say, by some twist of fate, my life was spared that day. Due to the tragic events that took place, we weren't going to put off till tomorrow what we could do today. After we regrouped & my workplace reopened, we decided that we would move in together, and plan a future side by side.
On January 1, 2002, we moved in together, and months later we formally got engaged - 2 days before the 1 year anniversary of his first email to me! We have already planned a January wedding. I can't tell you how incredible our love is for each other, and how what we have together is pure magic.
If anyone had told me that I was going to meet my soul mate on an internet dating site, I would have had them committed. In fact, all of John's friends used to tell him, "you know, you're never going to meet anyone sitting behind your computer all day & night!" LOL! How wrong they were.
